In honor of Black History Month, the City of Henderson will present Gospel Fest 2009 featuring urban poet/author Kweisi Gharreau (kway-c ga har ro) reciting original poetry selections on Friday, February 27 at 7 p.m. at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, located at 599 Greenway Road. As Chicago’s premier spoken word artist, Gharreau turned to poetry to cope with the untimely death of his younger brother in 1992. His emotional compositions have encouraged thousands, including him, to forgive, and come to terms with the sorrows and triumphs of life.
He is a champion poet and performer, accumulating many prestigious awards and accolades over his 17-year career. Gharreau may be most recognizable as the author of the Chicago Bulls’ street anthem “tha bullz” during the team’s 1997-1998 basketball championship run.
Additionally, Gharreau released his debut book n’nocent RAGE in 1999 and toured the U.S., Venezuela and Europe, selling over 4,600 units. He was voted “Best Poet” in Chicago in 1999 and received the award at the Chicago Music Awards in 2000. Gharreau is preparing to release his sophomore book innocent RAGE to OXFORD and debut his children’s book of poetry one, two, three, i LOVE poet-tree.
Gharreau currently lives in Los Angeles pursuing a career as a film and television producer. He continues to spread the message of spiritual power by conducting lectures at universities/colleges and high schools.
