FREE IRISH DANCE LESSONS TO BE OFFERED IN HENDERSON

Opportunity to learn traditional Irish dances at St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival

FREE Irish dance lessons will be offered to the public during the 43rd annual “Sons of Erin” St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival, March 14-15, at the lawn stage in front of the Henderson Convention Center, located at 200 S. Water Street in the Water Street District. Several sessions and dance contests will take place throughout the two days.

Performing artist Dona Brown will instruct people of all ages on the first basic steps of Irish step dancing called the Reel & Jig, as well as provide musical instrument lessons on the Irish spoons and the Bodhan (bowron), a traditional Irish drum.

“We are excited to offer affordable entertainment that involves community participation,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “Dona’s knowledge of the Irish culture is extensive and her lessons will bring out the Irish in everyone.”

Brown has been performing in Nevada for 30 years at several Las Vegas Strip and downtown hotels/casinos, as well as at Clark County schools and community centers. She is a member of the Nevada Arts Council Folk Arts Roster, an initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. It is a new resource designed to incorporate meaningful first person experiences with traditional arts and artists into the curriculum and programming of classrooms and cultural institutions in Nevada.

A family affair, this year’s “Sons of Erin” St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival, March 12-15, includes a three-day festival featuring two stages of live entertainment, carnival games and rides, children’s play area and more at the Henderson Events Plaza, located at 200 S. Water Street in the Water Street District. The Irish festivities will be highlighted by the annual parade down Water Street on Saturday, March 14, showcasing over 100 parade units with one-of-a-kind floats, special interest vehicles, dance groups, horses and marching bands dressed in emerald green.

Admission and parking for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival is free. Some activities may require paid admission. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s parade & festival will benefit Positively Kids.
