SOPHIE MILMAN RETURNS TO HENDERSON

Jazz singing sensation, Sophie Milman returns to the Henderson Events Plaza, located at 200 S. Water Street, on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. Milman will debut material from her much-anticipated new album, Make Someone Happy.

Russian-born Milman performed at the Henderson Live! Music Festival in 2006. The event celebrated the grand opening of the Events Plaza, Nevada’s first public outdoor events plaza, and featured a collection of jazz, rock and reggae performers.

“We are excited to see how Sophie has grown since her last performance,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “It’s been two years since she entertained the welcoming crowds with her powerful voice, beautiful melodies and catchy lyrics. She is a talented young lady whose future is bright.”

The 24-year-old has earned international acclaim beginning in 2004 as her self-titled debut album hit the Billboard Top 5 in Canada and the Top 15 in the United States. She has topped the iTunes jazz charts in five territories as well as sold out shows in Canada, United States, Japan and Europe. She has also been nominated twice for the prestigious Juno Award. Most recently, Milman was nominated for a Canadian Independent Music Award and her song “Make Someone Happy,” from the album with the same name, was listed second on iTunes Best Song of The Year for the jazz category.

Milman emigrated with her family from Russia at the tender age of seven years old. She spent most of her childhood in Israel listening to jazz. At 16 years old she moved to Canada where she made the transition from bookish teenager to glamorous jazz ingénue.
Make Someone Happy reflects on Milman’s three-year whirlwind from university student to a mature and eloquent jazz songstress. Each song tells a story of her past, present and future filled with pride, fear, excitement and passion. The album features modern versions of some great pop and rock classics as Stevie Wonder’s “Rocket Love” and The Guess Who’s “Undun.”

As the new face of jazz, Milman has revitalized this beloved tradition and has been compared to the talents of Ella Fitzgerald. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public.
