FANS TO DETERMINE WINNER OF PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD AT HENDERSON HERITAGE PARADE

Spectators & television viewers invited to vote for
favorite parade entry via text message for second consecutive year

For a second year in a row, fans watching the Henderson Heritage Parade, live and at home, on Saturday, April 16 will be able to vote for their favorite entry to determine the 2011 People’s Choice Award winner.

Each participant for this year’s Heritage Parade will be given a special text code to display on their entry. In addition, the code will also be presented on the bottom of the television screen for viewers watching the live broadcast at home on Cox Channel 96. Both options will allow the community the chance to select their People’s Choice through the popularity of text message.

To vote for their favorite participant, fans must text HLIVE, followed by the parade entry number, to 269411. Voting lines will be open from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on parade day. Standard text messaging and data rates apply.

After the votes are tallied, the People’s Choice Award winner will be announced at 12:30 p.m. during the awards ceremony at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District. The winner will also be presented with $500 in prize money, courtesy of several community partners.

“We want to encourage community involvement at all of our events,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “We strive to create a variety of unique opportunities, such as the People’s Choice Award text message campaign, to engage our citizens year after year.”

Last year’s campaign was a huge success, garnering a positive response from the entire community. Thousands of parade fans casted their votes for their favorite float, band, walking group or other entry. Burkholder Middle School’s marching band received the most votes and was crowned the first Heritage Parade People’s Choice Award winner in the history of the City of Henderson.

The Henderson Heritage Parade & Festival is a day-long celebration of the City’s 58-year history, rich traditions and community spirit. In addition to the parade, the event includes a Mayor & Council breakfast, classic car show and festival, featuring culturally-diverse entertainment, world cuisine, craft and cooking demonstrations, courtesy of the International Food & Folklife Association. Admission is complimentary.
