The City of Henderson announced the winners of this weekend’s Heritage Parade, which was held Saturday, April 16. Over 60 entries, from marching groups to special interest vehicles, equestrian entries and floats, competed to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in four categories. Cash prizes were awarded to floats, courtesy of several community partners, while marching group, equestrian and special interest vehicle category winners received ribbons.

Each entry was judged on incorporation of theme, creativity and overall appeal. This year’s parade theme was “Henderson – Chocolatiers for 30 Years”, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ethel M Chocolates, which has called Henderson home since 1981. In addition, Ethel M served as the 2011 Heritage Parade grand marshal, leading the entries through the Water Street District, from Ocean Avenue to Victory Road.

The City of Henderson also welcomed back the popular People’s Choice Award, where parade spectators and fans, watching the parade live and at home on Cox Channel 96, voted for their favorite parade entry via text message. Once again, the Burkholder Middle School Marching Band won the title, as well as $500 in prize money, courtesy of several generous community partners. This marks the school’s second consecutive year as the People’s Choice Award recipient.

Over 25,000 people attended the Henderson Heritage Parade & Festival, which celebrated the city’s 58-year history, rich traditions and community spirit. Prior to the parade, Mayor Hafen and members of City Council served breakfast to community members, who also enjoyed a festival at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, after the procession.

The festival featured two stages of entertainment, craft and cooking demonstrations, as well as international games and world cuisine, courtesy of the International Food & Folklife Association. More than 100 classic cars and trucks were also on display in the Water Street District following the parade.
