HO'OLAULE'A FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY

Annual event showcases Pacific Island culture, food and entertainment

The City of Henderson will transform into a tropical paradise complete with the sights, sounds and smells of the islands for the 20th annual Prince Jonah Kuhio Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival, September 11-12 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., daily. Admission and parking is complimentary.

The Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival, a partnership with the City of Henderson and the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club, features all things Hawaiian, Tahitian and Polynesian, from leis to hula dancing, Taiko drumming, poi and much more. The event showcases over 100 exotic food and craft vendors, including a selection of unique culinary demonstrations and two stages of live entertainment. Performances include an array of dance teams, hula groups, as well as award-winning artists and bands.

“We are honored to celebrate this huge milestone with the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “We’ve been a part of Ho’olaule’a since 2007 and have seen the event grow in popularity. It’s incredible to see the tremendous support from, not only Southern Nevada residents, but from travelers who choose our city as their destination to experience the island culture.”

Last year’s event was a huge success. Over 40,000 people attended the festival, an increase of over 10,000 people from 2008.

A portion of the proceeds from Ho’olaule’a helps fund the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club Founders Scholarship, which supports Hawaiians in their quest to attain higher levels of education. The club has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships since 1987, with the majority of the recipients being of native Hawaiian ancestry.
