Toughest course in triathlon series to challenge more than 1,800 of world’s best athletes
After five years in Clearwater, Florida, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) will officially move one of its most prestigious events, the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3, to the City of Henderson this fall. More than 1,800 domestic and international triathletes will qualify for the race that represents the culmination of more than 50 global qualifying events. The Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 will take place Sunday, September 11, beginning at 6:30 a.m. at Loews Lake Las Vegas, 101 Montelago Boulevard. Spectator admission is complimentary.
“We’re thrilled to be the new host city for the Ironman World Championships,” said Mark Calhoun, Henderson City Manager. “With our extensive background and experience organizing and executing successful triathlons like the Nevada Silverman, Henderson is quickly building a reputation as the premier destination to host high-caliber, international sporting events.”
The new Marine Corps Ironman World Championship course will prove to be more challenging for competitors, who are transitioning from a flat, sea-level race in a beach community to a tougher tour in the desert. Athletes will be tested, battling the waters of Lake Las Vegas with a 1.2-mile swim, followed by a demanding 56-mile bike ride through the mountainous terrain of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Participants will complete the race with a 13.1-mile run through the hills of Henderson’s scenic streets, crossing the finish line at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway, at approximately 10 a.m.
Athletes ranging from 18-75 years old will qualify to compete in the World Championship, Sunday, September 11. All 50 states and nearly 50 countries will be represented and winners of each age group, consisting of over 10 categories, will automatically qualify for the 2012 event. In addition, athletes will vie for a $100,000 professional prize purse.
The triathlon features several spectator viewing areas, including the bridges and beaches at Lake Las Vegas, roadside on the bike and run courses in the surrounding neighborhoods and at the Henderson Pavilion. Ancillary activities will occur throughout race weekend for competitors and fans of all ages.
