STREET CLOSURES SCHEDULED IN HENDERSON FOR MARINE CORPS IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, SEPTEMBER 11

List of road closures & detour routes available at HendersonLive.com

The City of Henderson will close several streets and traffic lanes, from Lake Las Vegas to Green Valley, Sunday, September 11, beginning as early as 4:30 a.m. and lasting as late as 6 p.m., for the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3. The triathlon, which is celebrating its first year in Henderson, will debut new bike and run courses. Major roadway such as Lake Mead Parkway, Boulder Highway, Warm Springs Road, Gibson Road, Horizon Ridge Parkway, Stephanie Street and Green Valley Parkway will be affected.

After diving into the waters of Lake Las Vegas for a 1.2-mile swim, more than 1,800 of the best international and domestic triathletes will hit the pavement, cycling 56 miles through Lake Mead Recreation Area and the scenic avenues of Henderson, completing the race with a 13.1-mile run to the finish line at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway.

With thousands of competitors and spectators embarking on Henderson and its surrounding areas, the streets will be busy. In addition, boaters and visitors travelling to Lake Mead, via the north entrance gate from Lake Mead Parkway, drivers using North Shore Road, as well as Lake Las Vegas residents and guests will be heavily impacted with cyclists. The increase of traffic will result in delays during peak race flow hours for several miles, which will take place between 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Motorists are urged to extreme caution when travelling along the course.

To ease commutes, race organizers have created a number of detour routes. Residents are advised to use recommended alternatives in such areas as Boulder Highway and Warm Springs, near the Valley Auto Mall, and multiple places in Green Valley including next to the Henderson Pavilion.

This will be the inaugural year Henderson has hosted the Ironman World Championships. After five years in Clearwater, Florida, the triathlon was moved to the premier city not only for its beautiful, year-round weather, but for its long-standing reputation as the best place to host a triathlon, as well as the top location for triathletes to compete on the most challenging race course in North America.

After five years in Clearwater, Florida, Henderson will look to make an immediate impact by providing Ironman and its athletes with the most challenging and exciting race course possible.
This year’s race will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Loews Lake Las Vegas, 101 Montelago Boulevard, Sunday, September 11, lasting nearly eight hours. The first finisher is expected to cross the finish line at the Henderson Pavilion at approximately 10 a.m. Spectator admission is complimentary.
